Q: When should I buy a new mattress?

A: The industry recommends every 8 to 10 years. Signs that you need a new one include a stained/torn mattress and/or sagging foundation that causes you and your partner to roll together unintentionally.

Q: How do I comparison shop when the model names differ from store to store?

A: You should determine which benefits you want to receive from your new mattress. Knowing basic information about the available constructions you prefer, based on the benefits that this construction offers, will help you decide which mattress or models suit your personal comfort preference and budget.

Q: How do I know which firmness I need in a mattress?

A: Firmness is a personal choice. But don't fall for the myth that you need the hardest surface for the best support. A good mattress will evenly distribute your weight and provide proper back support.

Q: My partner tends to move a lot during the night. What type of mattress will help ensure that I am not disturbed by his movements?

A: Make sure you buy a mattress big enough for both of you. You should also consider a mattress that is specifically designed to diminish the effect of partner movement, like the Simmons Beautyrest mattress - the "bowling ball" mattress. The patented Contour-Flex independent-action pocket coils inside the Simmons Beautyrest mattress respond independently, to minimize movement across the mattress.

Q: What can I do to enhance the lifetime of my mattress?

A: Rotate your mattress regularly and correctly (with the exception of Beautyrest Non-Flip mattresses which do not need to be turned or rotated). Cover it with a mattress pad and invest in a good quality mattress and foundation.

Q: Is there an odor coming from my mattress?

A: Bedding may have a new upholstery smell when it is opened out of the plastic wrap. The smell should diminish in two to three weeks. Increased air flow, such as opening a window in the room, will help to alleviate the odor.
Odors that do not appear until several years after the mattress has been in a home are generally a result from something in the environment. A mattress is a soft goods product and, like clothing, will absorb odors from cooking, smoking, or mildew.

Q: Why are there handles on my mattress?

A: Handles are provided to reposition the mattress on the box spring. The handles are not designed to support the full weight of the mattress. They should not be used for lifting or moving the mattress.

Q: How do I select the right mattress size?

Q: Why don't my linens fit my new mattress?

A: There is nothing wrong with bed linens of some "vintage." However, these "older" linens may not fit today's plusher premium bedding because of increased mattress border heights. If an older mattress pad is being used, frequently that may be the reason that sheets are not staying on the bed. When the mattress pad pulls up and off the corners, it brings the fitted sheet with it.

The sheet manufacturers are increasing the depths of their fitted sheets. Some deeper-made sheet products are available at most major retailers.
